Tobacco Barns (Secaderos)
Spain/USA, 2022. Director Rocio Mesa. 98min.
In Secaderos, a coming-of-age story of little Vera and teenager Nieves, a magical plant creature acts as guardian angel, observing and connecting with those who are able to look beyond.
Of physical form, nature’s embodiment is expressed through the use of elements that constitute her own essence. Either as creature or as anthropomorphic entity, she is adorned with flowers and leaves, wheat and grass. To answer her call for emotional and mental re-connection, is to wrap ourselves with her leaves, to cover with her flowers and to don her luscious vegetation. Only then maybe we will recognise our interconnection.
