Summer of Soul is a shining example of how what we think we know about ourselves and our collective histories can change forever. Questlove’s award-winning documentary reveals a long-forgotten celebration of Black Pride that took place across six Sunday afternoons in Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park during the now-infamous summer of 1969. Television producer Hal Tulchin recorded around 40 hours of the festival, but struggled to secure wider distribution for the footage. Dubbed the Black Woodstock, footage of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival was overlooked and therefore largely unseen by the public until 2021. Questlove’s film lovingly showcases Black music, fashion and creativity at the pinch-point of changing ideas about Black identity, agency and self-expression.
