Photographer Edward Barber presents the first instalment of a two-part programme which explores the fashion world through the documentary mode. Chop Suey (2001) takes us on an intense personal odyssey - an obsessive journey, seen through the eyes of one of the world's most famous fashion image-makers. Weber’s look at fashion and photography is unpredictable, startling and exciting. Part self-portrait, part documentary, the film is based on his discovery of a young male model. As a whole, it offers an autobiographical and self-reflexive mix covering Weber's key themes: photography, filmmaking and collecting.
Frederick Wiseman's Model (1980) forms the second instalment of a programme which takes a close look at fashion through the documentary mode. Unlike Bruce Weber’s subjective collage approach in Chop Suey, Weiseman applies a cool, understated view of the documentary observer. In Model he examines the intersection of fashion, business, advertising, photography, television and fantasy, navigating through the working lives of models at a New York agency.
